Esther is sadly missed and survived by husband Allan. Daughter Lisa in Langley with her amazing grandsons Marcus and Oliver.
Sisters Iris and her husband Brian in Cambridge Ontario, and Evelyn in Montreal. Allan's brother Donald and wife Colleen as well as Allan's brother Ken and wife Jill have all been greatly supportive at this time. Esther's sense of humor, her no-nonsense ability to cut down to the root of any challenge and her loyalty and passion for life, will be greatly missed by her tight group of friends.
Esther spent 40 years with BMO beginning in Montreal, later in Calgary, and retiring from the Semiahmoo branch, South Surrey, B.C. Esther moved from Montreal to Calgary in the late 70's and met Allan in 1980. Allan and Esther were married in 1983. Lisa, of course, was standing with her mother for the ceremony.
Esther was very creative in cooking, quilting, home decorating and fashion. She enjoyed many hours at the pool in Mexico finishing her latest creation, which she prepared before-hand so as to be able to do the hand sewing as she relaxed in the sun. Home decorating was a must-do. Every season Esther had a set of colors, a set of lamp shades and color coordinated accessories that were retired for the next change as the seasons advanced. Christmas was Esther's favorite time of year and she and Allan decorated their homes lovingly with Esther's guidance and insistence for detail. ‘It's all in the details' she would say.
Esther's challenge began when she was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2010 and she endured 4 surgeries followed by chemotherapy and radiation.
She coined the phrase ‘whack-a-mole' cancer due to the many times she had radiation all over her body. Special thanks and recognition to Dr. Ben Wiese, her GP and the friend who supported her all the way to the end. He was amazed with Esther's positive attitude and strength in the face of such a horrific disease. Thanks also must be sent to Dr. B. Czerkawski, Esther's tireless and dedicated Oncologist who made every effort to get the best results against the cancer, which eventually became resistant to all treatments. Dr. Islam Mohamed, her radiation oncologist whose great efforts and knowledge enabled Esther to have many extra months due to the fact he introduced radiating her diseased liver to slow the cancer. Dr. Gilliam Fyles and her team were so knowledgeable in handling the pain and symptom management. Special thanks to the Palliative care nursing team who visited us in our home and the Hospice House staff who so compassionately cared for Esther until the end.
A celebration of Esther's life will be held in Kelowna, at 1pm on July 4th at Ramada Inn 2170 Harvey Ave. Kelowna, B. C.
In Lieu of flowers, for those who so wish, a contribution in Esther's name can be made to target lung cancer research C/O B.C. Cancer Foundation, 339 Royal Ave, Kelowna B.C. V1Y 5L3
